Dragons, gargoyles and other grotesques are a symbol of many things: protection, warning and power. Not surprisingly, then, they have been used in architecture for centuries.
However, when they were first introduced to the architecture, They have a very practical use. They were actually designed as a rainstorm for preventing rainwater from the pooling around the Gothic cathedrals, castles and causing damage to structures.
After some time, with better construction techniques that protected buildings, these stone creatures became more of a decoration. Gargoyles were the original term for the sculptures.
