Our regular bass player was out of town during a recent concert, so we had to hire a sub to come play at work.

The guy we got to meet a – like the rest of us – went around the block music many times, so there was no apprehension about taking away the concert is a pro.

However, if we all did not know him for many years, our level understanding may have shot through the roof when he arrived at the concert rolling in an amp with an Ampeg SVT cabinet 8-10!

For those unfamiliar with it, was the standard set up for bass players in the late 60s and early 70s. If you did not have a platform "SVT" you were not s *** t!

The popularity stems from the pure tone of the amp, coupled with enough wattage for filling a small arena.

I stood there looking at the bench in awe. The head was packed with processors boat anchor, an endless array buttons, a small fortune in glass (pipes), based on an impressive, well-worn Cabinet with 8 – yes eight! – 10 "speakers. My age means to automatically save started aching Just Looking At It.

After all, the SVT, B-3, A-7, and Leslie cabins of the world who have kept our chiropractors generation in the business.

But the weight of the amp is not a concern. It was the considerable amount of volume that the facility may occur.

The concert we played was for high school reunion class of 1964. This crowd was more than we — it would obviously be a volume "low" case.

But, as mentioned previously, this guy was a pro, and the first notes he made in the perfect tone right at the right volume, and the concert went smoothly.

The fact is that even if your amp may have the ability to blow the roof of the Super Dome, it does mean you should.

A nice thing about guitar amps built today is that most of them are built with "master" volume control. They let you adjust the channel of the guitar with all the grain and the distortion that you want – and then adjust the master volume control for the level appropriate for the place you play.

It's great to have a guitar amp that is capable with your fellow band mates (and your audience), develops the ability to exercise restraint.

Sometimes, a concert you need to release all the power you have. But other times keep in mind that "most" did not be "stronger". In these moments – to paraphrase an old commercial – "a little dab'll are doing."
