Many young people have never even heard of the expression "set aside". It is essentially a way to buy something in a store without having to pay it forward. However, you do not actually receive the product at that point. Instead, you will pay in the store several times until the full price is reached and then you're able to pick it up and take home.
If you are scratching their heads wondering "Why would anyone do something like that? then you're not alone. Because in the past two decades, notion of putting something on layaway has been replaced almost entirely by one thing: credit cards.
The process thought "I'll be able to pay for this soon anyway, so I'll put on my credit card" has plunged our nation into a situation of debt and save consumers. Because, as we all know, this acquisition will rarely paid in the period that you had originally planned (or at least rationalized in your head or your spouse in the store). Then racks rising interest in the months and months and the issue can often cost you much more than the original price.
Today, It's so easy to get a credit card that children turning only 18 are already under way in debt. These are the same kids who could not tell you what the term even means layaway. For them, if they want some thing … there is no need to wait to save up for it. Just charge the credit card and possibly move to pay off. Unfortunately, for many parents who grew up with parents put their purchases on the down side, the thought process is the same. We have become a nation of have-to-have-it-now consumer, whatever the cost in the long term.
There are studies showing that the down side is make a comeback, though. Since 2008, the United States was in recession and consumers are gradually forced to be smarter with their Finance. Spending by credit card, and all spending is down significantly. But people still need to plan purchases. Children will still have birthdays. Christmas will still come each year to December 25. So stores are somewhat familiar setting aside a "revival". It is particularly common during the holiday season. Department stores like Sears and K-Mart are able to promote their options set aside in their ads Sunday!
One of the most shocking new layaway as regards what I saw occurred October 12 of this year (2009) Informatics for the rich and the style conscious. To hear that they are promoting the purchase of set aside in their new stores are reflect on the state of our economy, I must admit. Sobering as it may be, however, it is good news because it shows that demand for layaway is now strong enough for companies like Apple to embrace. Increased demand for purchases layaway means that consumers are more judicious in their purchases and do not go into debt ill during the holidays just to afford what they want. Bad news for companies credit card, but I figure they'll still do fine for years to come. It is hard to feel sorry for the card companies credit, really. With their outrageous fees and predatory tactics, they are about the lowest kind of company I can think of.
I applaud set aside the bench, and I hope it's a success for stores are welcoming it again. Any sign of expenditure Consumer smarter and less consumer debt is a good thing, in my eyes.
